New Extra-large Hardcover Photo Book Available with iPhoto 8.1

iPhoto 8.1, the latest update to iPhoto ’09, introduces an extra-large version of the popular hardcover photo book. The new 13 x 10-inch size book — nearly 40% bigger than the traditional large book — features the same full-cover dust jacket and a new satin finish on the photo wrap cover. It makes a perfect gift or coffee table addition. Also included in this update are new travel book and holiday card themes.

Next Mac Office, due by 2010’s end, gets Outlook

Microsoft has announced that the next version of Office for Mac will arrive by the 2010 holiday buying season, and it added that the new version will include a version of Outlook.

Apple releases RAW compatibility update

Apple has released a Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update for Aperture 2, iPhoto ‘08 and iPhoto ‘09. Update 2.6 supports RAW files from the Canon Digital Rebel T1i (EOS 500D in Europe and EOS Kiss Digital X3 in Japan), Nikon D5000 and Olympus E-30 digital SLRs. The update is available for immediate download from Apple’s website.

PercepTool plugin for Adobe Photoshop

perceptoolAtlantic Light Works has released PercepTool, a tone mapping plugin for Photoshop CS3 and CS4 that attempts to mimic the brain’s interpretation of light and shade. Developed with photographer George DeWolfe, it takes either mono or color images and re-maps the tone response to offer a more ‘realistic’ rendition with greater depth. It is available priced at $89.95 or for trial download, for both Windows and Mac platforms.

Adobe offers ACR 5.4 Release Candidate

Adobe has released a release candidate of Photoshop Camera Raw 5.4 for immediate download from its Adobe Labs site. The latest version extends RAW support for 26 additional cameras and camera backs including the Canon EOS 500D, Nikon D5000, Olympus E-620 and 18 Hasselblad models. The ‘Release Candidate’ label indicates the update is tested, but not yet the finalized version.

Phase One releases Capture One 4.8

Phase One has announced version 2.8 of Capture One 4, PRO and DB RAW workflow software. The latest update provides support for the P40+ and Olympus E-620. It also provides improved camera support for the P65+, Leica D-Lux 4 and Olympus E-30 digital cameras.

Nikon has released an updated version of Camera Control Pro 2, its remote control software for its DSLRs. Version 2.5.0 extends support to the latest D5000 digital SLR. It also resolves minor issues pertaining both to Windows and Mac users.

Firefox 3.5 Beta 4: Mozilla delivers the speed, as Beta 5 gets under way

The organization now believes the public is ready to experience the fastest browser it’s produced yet, but are the speed demons already spoiled by Chrome?

There are now (once again) three simultaneous development tracks for Mozilla’s Web browser, as the first public beta of Firefox to be numbered 3.5 has officially hit the streets; the first private Beta 5 of Firefox 3.5 is being distributed to Mozilla testers; and the latest Firefox 3.6 Alpha continues to make headway.
