Lala Plans to Open Music-Streaming Dime Store on iPhone

Lala Plans to Open Music-Streaming Dime Store on iPhone

iPhone users may soon have access to a new app that lets them buy eternal streaming rights to songs for 10 cents apiece rather than pay more for permanent downloads. Music vendor Lala has submitted the program for App Store approval. Listeners get free previews, and if they buy permanent streaming rights, they can also save their favorite songs to the phone's memory for playback even when there's no cell signal.

Online music retailer Lala is preparing to launch an iPhone application that its cofounder says paves the way for the end of downloading songs in the MP3 format.

The app allows users to buy the right to stream songs from a digital locker forever for just 10 US cents each. The song quality is lower than what Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iTunes offers, but "intelligent caching" lets the tracks load and play in seconds, with playback possible even outside of cellphone coverage.

In a letter to the FCC, Apple specified that it hasn’t actually rejected Google’s Voice application for the iPhone — rather, it’s still under consideration. The letter was a response to an FCC inquiry on why exactly the Google Voice application has not yet become available to users. Apple denied consulting with AT&T on the matter, and AT&T said the same in its own letter to the FCC.

Latest trend: Announcing iPhone apps before they’re approved

Now that it’s a known fact that Apple rejects something in the neighborhood of 88,000 iPhone apps a year, companies are getting wise and publicizing their applications before Apple has a chance to finish reviewing them.

RealNetworks has submitted an app for its subscription music service Rhapsody to Apple for approval. The application will let subscribers access Rhapsody’s 8 million song database for streaming over EDGE/3G/Wi-Fi. Though it hasn’t passed Apple’s review yet, Real is already publicizing the app.
