Top 10 Windows Server 2008 R2 Features #10: Boot from virtual devices
Last month, Microsoft made available to its TechNet partners the first release-to-manufacturing code for Windows Server 2008 R2, the next edition of the server operating system that premiered in January 2008. While I’ve said here before that I feel Windows 7 is "Vista service pack 3" (and I meant that in a good way), Microsoft is right up front about the fact that R2 is the Windows 7 kernel applied to WS2K8, the result of that alone being an immediate improvement in the system.

Will two Windows Mobiles get consumers interested?
A recent Digitimes report told us what we already sort of knew, but phrased it in such a way that the tech media did a huge double take.
It said that Microsoft will launch Windows Mobile 6.5 in October, and then Windows Mobile 7 in the fourth quarter of next year…pretty much a verbatim repeat of what Steve Ballmer said about the platform last March. However, the report goes on to say that Microsoft will be running what it calls “a dual-platform strategy to allow Microsoft to compete with the Android-based platform using Windows Mobile 6.5 and also compete with iPhones leveraging Windows Mobile 7.”

Top 10 Windows 7 features #1: Action Center
The entire success of Windows in the public mind may come down to whether users feel more confident and in control. Action Center will be critical.
It’s a sad fact which even Microsoft itself has stopped denying: The success of Windows in recent years has been despite the fact that the operating system isn’t exactly embraced by its users. The percentage of Windows users who love Windows may not come anywhere near the percentage of Mac OS users who love Macintosh. Windows is what comes on most people’s PCs.

PercepTool plugin for Adobe Photoshop
Atlantic Light Works has released PercepTool, a tone mapping plugin for Photoshop CS3 and CS4 that attempts to mimic the brain’s interpretation of light and shade. Developed with photographer George DeWolfe, it takes either mono or color images and re-maps the tone response to offer a more ‘realistic’ rendition with greater depth. It is available priced at $89.95 or for trial download, for both Windows and Mac platforms.

Top 10 Windows 7 Features #2: Device Stage
If the PC is really supposed to be the nerve center of a network of devices, then why should Windows manage them all like hard drives?
If the strange feeling that Vista was less secure than XP was topmost on critics’ gripe lists over the last three years — regardless of the facts which contra-indicate that feeling — running a close second was the feeling that very little, if anything, outside of the PC worked with Vista when you plugged it in.

Google Chrome 3: Incremental changes along the road to Extensions
Big things brewing mean a smaller-than-expected crop of new stuff in latest version.
It has been hard to tell, since Google pulled the “beta” flag from its Chrome browser back in December, where we are in that software’s development process. So, clarifying for all the good folks in Fileforum: Welcome to 3.0.182.2, the current version of the browser not to be found in the stable download channel. Remember that Google is the first to say they “don’t give to much weight to version numbers,” and enjoy the latest rev for what it is: A few fixes, a few tweaks, and a lot of anticipation for Extensions, coming soon to a How-Did-I-Live-Without-This? near you.

Knives Out for the iPhone
As summer approaches, the competitive heat on the iPhone has grown more intense. Palm has inked a launch date for the Pre. Microsoft is polishing up its WinMo 6.5 update. Androids are on the march in China, a market Apple has targeted for growth. Expectations for the next generation of the iPhone — whenever it may arrive — are high.
A new iPhone model could appear as early as next month, but Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL)
rivals are busy making plans to grab their share of this summer’s smartphone spotlight.
In a move that could wound Apple’s hopes of penetrating the Chinese market, China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless carrier, is reportedly coming up with its own Android-based challenger to the iPhone.
In the U.S., Sprint (NYSE: S)
and Palm (Nasdaq: PALM)
plan to debut Palm’s supposed iPhone killer, the Pre, on June 6, two days before the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicks off in San Francisco.
Meanwhile, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT)
is targeting the enterprise market, which Apple is just beginning to tap, with its Windows Mobile platform.
